Music Resources for Young Trumpeters
We are just starting to gather and create materials for this jazz page. Here is a basic swing-style articulation page, and a few pages with melodies that have the swing style articulations all notated above each note. Click the title to download a PDF of the song, and then click "Listen!" to hear an MP3 of the song.
A website that is a GREAT resource for jazz solo transcriptions (recorded improvised solos that are then written out at a later time) and jazz trumpeter biographies, visit Jeff Helgesen's Jazz Trumpet page. He's put together a terrific collection of jazz material.
Here are some improvisation information pages and exercise pages. There is a lot of information to be learned, but don't be afraid of improvising!!! It can be a lot of fun and will really help you become more creative and musical in your playing.
One of the most popular and well-respected series of jazz improvisation materials is the large collection of play-along recordings published by Jamey Aebersold. He provides a book and accompaniment recordings for literally hundreds of jazz standards. He also has a few volumes that are more "instructional" than song-oriented. Volume 3 is one of them, called "The ii-V7-I Progression." The links below are PDFs of exercise pages you can perform along with track 1 of that volume, and I have also provided an MP3 of that track. These are good exercises to play even if you don't use the play-along.
Of course, the best way to learn jazz styles and improvisation is to listen to great jazz players. They don't have to be trumpeters, either. Here is a list of jazz players who are good for beginning jazzers trying to learn their way around the horn. All are trumpeters except where noted, and most all can be found on YouTube or on iTunes.
